Many brands ask whether they can send free products instead of paying. Sometimes yes, but not always. Here is how to decide.
What is a gifted collaboration?
You send a product or offer an experience, and the creator may or may not post. In a stricter version, you agree on content in exchange for the gift.
When gifting can work
- The product has real value for the creator.
- The creator is small and genuinely likes the category.
- You are not asking for a polished video, exclusivity or usage rights.
- You accept that the creator may choose not to post.
When you should pay
- You require specific deliverables or posting dates.
- The creator needs to travel or spend significant time producing content.
- You want to reuse the content in your own ads.
- You need exclusivity or approval of drafts.
- The creator's time is worth more than the product.
Compliance still applies
In the UAE, promotion of products, including gifted items, generally needs the creator to have a valid Advertiser Permit and to disclose that content is promotional. See our Advertiser Permit guide.
A fair hybrid
Many successful collaborations combine a fee with a product or experience. For example, a restaurant offers a meal plus a fee for a Reel and Stories, or a skincare brand sends a full routine plus payment for a review.
Tips for gifting
- Be clear about expectations before you send anything.
- Send products the creator would actually use.
- Do not demand positive reviews. Honest feedback builds trust.
- Give the creator time to test the product.
Tips for creators
- Decide your minimum: what you will do for a gift and what requires a fee.
- Put it in writing.
- Be transparent with followers.
